My wife had commented on how my last post, about the Murphy desk, was “instructionally vague”. I must admit though, it was sorta on purpose. As I’ve said before, “This this the way I do it. There are many other ways.” Well… that wasn’t quite the the case with the Murphy desk… simply because I really had no clue what I was doing. So far so good though.
In any case I hope I always make it clear that I’ll give any additional information you require, just let me know.
Oh my my! Yesterday, I learned that my cousin’s birthday party barbecue is this weekend. Five days is really short notice, but I DO have a lighter case in mind; coming up with an idea can be the hardest part sometimes. So I decided I’d give it a go, besides the Astronaut fella, it’s another chance to get my desk broken in – hopefully not just broken. A few hours into the sculpture I thought to speak to my uncle and confirm the design.
“Yea, he loves the Miami Hurricanes, their mascot is an Ibis.”
Thankfully, my uncle knows me well enough to know I don’t have a clue about baseball or their mascots. Sadly, I was a few hours into – NOT an Ibis. My cousin graduated from Florida Atlantic University and their mascot is an owl. Now THAT is a animal perfectly shaped to sculpt onto a Zippo! So if my cousin doesn’t like the owl… a Zippo is still a cool gift.
I’m currently 10 hours into the sculpt and it’s been progressing at a spankin’ good pace! I say “10 hour” which is the time I’ve spent sculpting the lighter case when I REMEMBER to keep track. I am SO BAD at keeping track of my hours! If I ever tell you the number of hours I’ve spent working on a project, it’s generally give-or-take 5 hours. I need a better system of tracking my time…
So alright! An unexpected owl lighter case – completion duration estimated at warp speed! I’m fairly certain my cousin doesn’t know about this website which is crazy! I’ve been telling people… you’ve been telling people… they should all know by now. Wouldn’t it be funny though, if you were surfing around on the interweb, and happen to discover a gift being made for you? I’d be excited… but totally pissed-off if it was a stupid owl.
It took very little experimentation to realize how conducive the shape of an owl is to the shape of the Zippo.
I wish I could could say that the eyebrows and cheeks were all my idea, but Burrowing Owls really look mischievous like that. Remind you of anyone else?
Now that I had the basic shape it was time to begin adding the detail to the feathers.
Believe it or not, all the feather-work you see there was done using the one rubber tipped tool I NEVER use. It’s called a cup round clay shaper, and unless you plan on making some feathers or scales…well… I haven’t found any other uses for it yet.
That’s where things stand now. I assume the reason the sculpting has gone so quick is due to how well the owl design fits the Zippo. There are no elements that have thrown me for a loop….yet.
