Happy New Year!
I haven’t found anyone to write this blog for me. So I’m thinking a good 2015 resolution would be to write shorter blog posts more often, rather than just waiting a couple months to feel guilty for NOT writing anything. A couple days ago this was my plan but as I began to type, my computer died. I mean it completely died, no little lights on…nothing. Maybe the new year heard me complaining about having to plop down in front of the computer to write and decided to do me a favor.
In 2014 I participated in my first art show at Unity 88 and I finished off the year involved in 3 more art shows. Two were at the Chill Wine Lounge arranged by CACO and the final show was at the Artwalk on Wilton Drive. None of the shows were quite what I expected, but they all provided good learning opportunities for the future plus a buttload of new friends and connection with other local artists. One of the unexpected benefits of doing these art shows was the inspiration that arose from just having to prepare for them. So many new things to consider: display, lighting, boxes, transportation, prices, titles… branding?? It really makes a guy think.
I needed help, but good help is hard to find. So, as usual, I began by exploring whether or not I could make it… Make help, that is. Within the same vein as my other clockwork critters and post apocalyptic playthings, I imagined an army of robotic ants to help with all the minutiae I solitarily obsess over. Built simply from repurposed materials, I was happy with how the ants turned out but ultimately unimpressed with the assistance they provided (I blame cell phones). For me, they were just sign holders to draw attention to my other more time consuming creations, but it wasn’t long before they proved themselves to be focal points in their own right. They became so popular that I decided to use the same technique to make a chess set.
2015… The year of Solafar maybe? I think I’ve been sucessfully arty so far, but it’s time to get businessy. If you want to help, please contact me or stop into my shop and purchase an ant person to assist with your projects. Maybe you can get them to put their phones down for a freaking minute. If you’re in Instagram find me @solafar and enter to win a free Ant person painter. A random drawing for the winner will take place on February 7th 2015.
