Aye eye Captain

I've been burning some cataract eyes in the oven, but it's my own fault: I didn't follow the recipe quite exactly enough. It all started when I was eyeing some glass doll eyes for sale on Etsy. They're gorgeous, so lifelike and priced as such. Luckily, I discovered a tutorial online for making eyes from polymer clay that're comparable to glass ones. They warned me to use the liquid Fimo, but with a gift card in my pocket and instant gratification in my mind, I purchased the liquid Sculpey at my local Pearl Fine Art Supply. I'm still not done experimenting with the liquid Sculpey, but as you can see from the tutorial linked above, the liquid Fimo comes out a whole lot better: glossier with less bubbles. Tweet

Cake Topper Tips

Cakes, showers, dresses, flowers, planners, favors, chairs, tables, invitations,  and rings... What do all these things have in common? If you put the word "wedding" in front of them, it increases it's cost substantially. It's incredible to me how much wedding paraphernalia costs. Believe me, I know first hand. My wife and I planned a small get together on the beach for our wedding. My grandmother and I made the wedding cake, my uncle cooked for us, my little brother did the ceremony, the table cloths were plastic and we decorated with paper streamers and seashells from the beach,... oh!... but there was so much more and it still cost us thousands! It's just one of those things: wedding stuff has always been expensive and it's expected to be expensive, so... it is epensive. Although it's become customary to price gouge certain events, it doesn't mean EVERYONE has to do it. I charge based on supplies, shipping...

molds

If this weekend was a bad weekend for casting from newly made molds - nobody told me! I lined em up, sprayed 'em down, filled 'em up, and popped out a few pieces. It's a bit more involved than that, but you get the idea. What we have here are the 3-part-molds for the top and bottom of Amy's lighter case. The orange colored ones are the 2-part mold for the Rook, and the little ones in the upper-right hand corner are for the Pawn. You may have noticed the use of dominoes in one of my other mold making tutorials. I don't know why I have so many of them but, I use them to help build-up a level wall around the piece. Otherwise I'd just have gobs of clay all around it. The mold for the second half of the lighter case goes just like the first half except BETTER! As you...

Hair Tutorial

I recieved a lot of questions after the last post asking how to sculpt hair. I am in fact the son of a hairdresser, and like the old saying goes about the mechanics car always being broken - my car is broken. My experimentation with sculpting hair all began with this commissioned piece below. It's based on the main character from the video game Stranger's Wrath. Stranger, is one of many incredibly inventive creatures created by Oddworld Inhabitants. It seemed to take forever to make as I tried to perfect the look of the hair. I shall demonstrate my process on an unfinished piece.     I'm going to give the lizard below long hair and mutton chops, so you can see that the same technique can be used for all different lengths of hair. I start off by guesstimating the general area where the thickest part of the hair...
