Owl Case Conclusion (fin)

owl056

Dear Scott, Be happy, birthday boy! On my way home from your birthday party I was wracking my brain,"Why did I not want to see you open your gift?" After we got home I sat down to write some thoughts (it's a fairly reliable way for me to "work things out"). I wrote about fear that the things I make will break under a reasonable amount of pressure. I wrote about how I rushed your lighter case; I was pushing myself to see if I could do it, and do it I did! I also wrote that in the future I won't rush one of theses lighter cases again because... That's when my phone chimed that I had a text: Scott was very happy. He thought he might have broke it though. He asked me not to tell you, so don't tell him that I told you that he told...

A lighter case’s fate (owl #3)

owl033

It's coming down to the final hours... I hate when this happens. We knew a kink would rear it's head in this process, but who knew it'd be rolled in a riddle.  I'm making a mold of the Owl now, and the cure time is 5 hours. Five hours for the new stuff I'm trying: Smooth-On, Dragonskin 10 Medium. That's right... I found it at my local art store and was curious to check it out. This Zippo case was not on the agenda, so in using what I've got, I'm faced with a 5 hour dry time. It's supposed to be a very stretchy "high performance" silicone rubber, so I'm considering trying this Owl case as a 2 part mold (easier, MAYBE). Last time, I spent an absurd amount of time creating barriers to make a 3-part-molds only to have the separate sections congeal into one chunk. I'm wondering if I should risk destroying ANOTHER...

That's real love Tod... a custom birthday Zippo case. This is the first custom zippo I've made since I've started this website! I hope you have a wonderful birthday, I certainly appreciated the opportunity to make this piece for you. It's time to relight those candles! Tweet

Overnighted

small-gift-box-in-hand

Tod's lighter case is in route and has been overnighted to make it by his BIRTHDAY!! I cannot believe he still hasn't found out about this website! In fact... I don't believe it, so what I'm showing is not his lighter case, it can be yours for as little as $80.00 (just the case for your own zippo). Tod's case is painted differently (you'll see it tomorrow). The original has been laid too rest. It's glued, but I just don't think it'd survive a trip through the mail to Amy and Tod. Tweet

knock on wood (three part molds)

my head

pparently, I forgot to knock on wood as I wrote my last post.  "Awe, look how confident he tried to act... isn't that cute." So, now the top half of Amy and Tod's original lighter case is in pieces and I'm not sure if the mold itself is salvagable. <insert dumbfounded here> I was so careful while prepairing the lighter case for the NEW blue rubber mold material. I checked and double-checked that all spaces were sealed as I smoothed each section of clay barrier to pour the first piece... then the second... and third. I guess looking back on it now, the process did go suspiciously super-duper smooth.                   I the issue lied in one of the following: The "wet clay" I used to make my barriers might have reacted poorly with the rubber during the curing. I did not give the...
