It’s Time

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

In fact... it's past time. My wife and I have finished up a few Solar System bracelets from the planet beads I had made. They're being posted to Etsy now. If you like them as much as I do, I'm going to need to make some more. Learning their order, different chemical make-ups and temperatures is all well and good, but by just researching the planets colors, sizes, and other physical features, I've had a lot of fun simulating each planets characteristics in polymer clay. The colors of the planet beads are as close to the "real" colors of the planets as my research could find: The Sun. If you aren't familiar with the sun I'm sorry for you; it's the big fireball in the sky, outside during the daytime. It's where most of the light comes from. It's by far the largest body in our Solar System and consequently the largest...

Among other things, I've been working on the weevil sculpture. I'm happy with how it's coming along and  most excited to see my improvement in skill with the polymer clay medium. Not long ago I had sculpted a relatively big ant. I found it hella' frustrating detailing the ants legs. Now, working on the weevil, sculpting the legs wasn't nearly as hard, with better results (but still hella' time consuming). On the whole, I spent almost 4 hours sculpting the 6 legs to my liking. Not to mention that those 4 hours were hella' spread out over a few days (the child just... keeps... growing). The truth is, repetition can be a good teacher in and of itself. Although, if I had to choose just a few new techniques that caused the improvements, it'd go a little something like this: First off, with the ant, I built, posed, and secured...

I’ve been beading my wife

... and now she's left me with the kid. Yes, but no. Anyhow, The beadings have become pretty regular now; to think that when she first asked me about polymer clay necklace beads I told her, "I'd only tried it once before without much luck... or fun." That was years ago. Now, taking the initiative to do some research, it turns out the term for the technique of making polymer clay beads is "caning" and it's derived derived from a glassblowing technique - caneworking. It also turns out the most important tool is a "very sharp blade".   You'll smudge up and deform every cut you make and absolutely drive yourself crazy if you don't have the "very sharp blade". Can you imagine what this world would be like with a bunch of crazy people just out walking around?! Which reminds me, does sarcasm ever comes across in text? Suffice to say, with...

Bracelets and a teddy bear

What do think if theses nuts? Not bad, eh? Brassy. As I trudge my way to a better grasp of Twitter and searching for tweeting sculptors I found a twillion crafters. I am now their follower but all they ask of me is to enter their website contest, plus I got a link on how to make a cool bracelet. Now, I know what you're thinking, "You guys are over here making bracelets?" I'll tell you exactly what I told the waitress at Hooters, "Hell no, I'm not making bracelets. I'm a man!" These babies are Hardware made from hex nuts and twine! I took the bracelet hardware design a step further and made some necklaces as well. I'm posting the necklaces and bracelets in the "Shop" in case you're interested. The necklaces incorporate washers that I've stamped with a metal stamp kit (check out your local Harbor Freight store). My...
